Youth Advisory Council
I was a member of the Saint-Grégoire Youth Advisory Council for several years, following an initial stint on the Municipal Youth Council. This involvement taught me how to organise events, present projects to elected officials, and work with volunteers, community groups, and municipal services.
From the Municipal Youth Council to the Advisory Council
I started on the Municipal Youth Council, aimed at 11 to 14-year-olds, before moving on to the Youth Advisory Council. This continuity allowed me to gradually progress from discovering local life to taking a more hands-on part in projects run over several months.
The most educational part was understanding how an idea turns into a real event: you have to define the need, find the right contacts, anticipate logistics, and accept that success does not depend solely on our motivation.

Event organisation
I helped organise events such as the toy and ski boot sale, which draws over 1,000 people depending on the year. This type of project requires coordinating volunteers, venues, publicity, and the day's schedule.

I also contributed to the Games Festival, an event designed to bring different people together around board games, activities, and discovery areas. These events taught me to be more practical: a successful project often relies on small details prepared in advance.
Local communication
Another major part of the Council was communication. We had to explain our actions to local residents, elected officials, and partner associations. I took part in public discussions, prepared materials, and published information via the town's channels.
This aspect taught me how to adapt the message to the audience. You do not present a project the same way to young people, parents, elected representatives, or the volunteers who will be helping out on the day.
What I have learned from it
This experience gave me a first taste of project management, but within a very practical setting: meetings, constraints, responsibilities, and a real audience on the day of the event. Above all, I take away the importance of organisation, clear communication, and working with people who do not always share the same priorities.
